Abstract
nasotracheal intubation is preferred to orotracheal intubation for the ventilatory care in the intensive care unit because of easy maintenance of oral hygiene, fixation of tube and feeling of well-being. But there were reported many complications
associated with nasotracheal intubation, such as, tracheal mucosal injury, laryngeal trauma and sinusitis. And then author was to elucidate the effect of nasotracheal intubation on the paranasal sinuses by the review the X-ray film of patients
who
admitted to I.C.U.. Thirty patients were studied to investigate the influence of a nasotracheal tube on the paranasal sinuses. In the patients intubated less than 5 days(n=24) revealed sinusitis in 3 cases(12.5%) on radiological examination,
averagely.
But in the patients intubated more than 5 days(n=18) was affected paranasal sinuses in 9 cases(50.0%) on radiological finding. Therefore author can get conclusion that sinusitis is associated with duration of nasotracheal intubation and
unexplained
fever with suppurative nasal discharge should be evaluated for paranasal sinus infection in the patients with nasotracheal intubation.
